Setup
- Installing your board in the case
- Plugging in the board
- Connecting to the board
- Installing the LED Screen if needed
Let the Setup Begin
Installing your board in the case
First thing you’re going to want to do is attach the board to your new custom CryptoCloaks with the 4 screws you received!
This will help ensure the board is secure and won’t fall out.
Plugging the board in
After the board is secure grab the included PSU and plug the unit in!
Simple! Watch it fire up!
Connecting to the board
Once you have powered on the unit. You will see on the screen “Configuration SSID”
You will now pivot to your wifi connection on either your phone or computer and search for the board internal network.
EX: This boards WiFi name is Bitaxe_0C5D
Connect to the boards network and it will bring you to a configuration page where you will enter your Home WiFi information so your Bitaxe can hash!
Screen Installation
This step is also useful if your screen is not working when you receive it.
Sometimes it loosens during shipping.
Line up the screen pins with the holes on the top of the board.
Push the screen all the way down to fully seat the screen to the board.
Time For the Settings!
Connecting to Home WiFi
This is an easy step! Enter your Home WiFi information. WiFi SSID and WiFi Password. (Host Name is the name of your bitaxe on your network)
Once the info is entered. Click Save and then Restart!
NOW GRAB THE IP ADDRESS ON YOUR BITAXE LCD AND TYPE THAT INTO YOUR WEB BROWSER TO CONNECT TO IT!
Flashing the Latest Firmware
I think it’s personally important for everyone to know how to flash their boards because there will be updates you’ll want.
Reminder this will void warranties but is important.
“Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for life.”
We’re going to start by clicking “Check”
Oh look! Current version is showing v2.4.2 but there’s a new one! Let’s get the latest changes that will help make our board run better!
We’re now going to click “esp.miner.bin” to download the latest firmware. Save this file to your computer.
(If the file doesn’t show up, make sure your browser isn’t deleting it and make sure it keeps the file)
We’re have the file saved it’s time to update the firmware! We’re going to click the browse button!
After clicking the browse button, find your file and click open! Once you hit open do not do anything!
Once you hit the open button you should see the screen change to “Working…” It’s upgrading! Let it do it’s thing. Do not unplug your Bitaxe!
Once it’s finish you can refresh the page and you should see the Current Version: showing us what the latest release was! YAY! YOU DID IT!
Now we’re going to update the Website or UI also! Same steps as the firmware.
This time You’re going to click “www.bin” to download the file, once downloaded you are going to click “Browse” for Update Website!
Congrats! I knew you could do it! Wasn’t so hard or scary was it? Now you’re set to easily update to the latest and greatest on your own!
Setting the Optimal Hash Settings
Depending on your Bitaxe board double check you are running defaults.
Connect to a Pool
Finding a Pool
Our current favorite Solo Mining Pool is Noderunners! It’s kept our Bitaxes hashing without dropping connections a lot.
You can however leave use the default pool Public Pool and just enter in your you Bitcoin address and name.
Pool Settings
If you want to runner Noderunner pool here what you enter! Stratum URL / Stratum Port
For the Stratum User you’ll want to enter your bitcoin address followed by whatever name you want to use (This is the name of your miner on the pool).
Example : “bcasdijkhasdkjasfkjhdsfkjhasfdkjhadskjh.CryptoCloaks2”
The fallback stratum is there in >v2.4 so you can setup a back up pool that will automatically connect and keep hashing if your main pools drops for any reason.
For us, we just used the same pool info as we didn’t want a backup.
Common Issues and How to Solve them
Bitaxe is not connecting to the Pool?
99% of the time this is a WiFi or Router Issue.
Please make sure your router isn’t blocking incoming or out going traffic for the bitaxe. We’ve seen in several cases an AI firewall is actively stopping it from connecting to the pool.
Screen is not working or lighting up?
99% of the time this is easily fixed by popping the screen off and pushing it back into the board and making sure it’s seated all the way down.
Some times they come loose during shipping.
My Device display shows ‘Device overheated, check webUI for info”. How can I troubleshoot?
If you have changed the settings it is best to go back to default. If you see the overheat error on the OLED you must first reset overheat mode. Then, reset the frequency and core voltage to the defaults. Here is a video showing how to reset the device. When the device overheats it will no longer display the IP address on the OLED. If you do have the IP address saved you can obtain it directly from your router. If you are unsure how how to do this check out the next FAQ: How do I find my IP address.
My device keeps overheating even on default settings. Should I repaste the chip?
If your device keeps overheating even on default freq/voltage settings, you likely have a problem with cooling. Inspect your fan and make sure it’s clean and running normally. Repasting thermal paste might help with cooling. This however is an advanced procedure and voids warranty. If you decide to repaste the chip we recommend a high quality paste like Kryonaut Thermal Grizzy. The procedure for repasting thermal compound is shown in this video. https://youtu.be/vkcxQP96MpY
I entered the wrong Wi-Fi password and now my device is stuck in a reconnect loop. How do I resolve this?
Press the ‘Boot’ button and it will reactivate Bitaxe’s device Wi-Fi. You can then connect to this wifi network and enter your Wi-Fi credentials. If this doesn’t work, you can turn off the Wi-Fi network Bitaxe is trying to connect by turning off the Wi-Fi router, to break the reconnection loop.
My bitaxe seems to be in a constant disconnect/reconnect loop when connected via USB to my computer. I’m unable to flash any firmware because of this. What do I do?
This generally happens after installing incorrect firmware or when there’s no firmware on the ESP32. Hold down Boot and press Reset, to enter firmware download mode. Then use bitaxe webflasher to flash the correct firmware on your device.
CryptoCloaks is not responsible for damage due to heat/flashing/modifications or changing settings.
